The Edward Bryne Memorial assistance grant (JAG) Program is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to states and units of local government. The funding may be used to provide additional personnel, equipment, supplies, and training for law enforcement programs, prosecution and court programs, prevention and education programs, corrections and community corrections programs, and drug treatment and enforcement programs, to name a few.
Purposes for Which JAG Funds Awarded May Be Used
Subject to certain specific prohibitions,1 34 U.S.C. ยง 10152(a)(1) provides that JAG award funds are to be used to provide additional personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, training, technical assistance, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following programs:
- Law enforcement programs.
- Prosecution and court programs.
- Prevention and education programs.
- Corrections and community corrections programs.
- Drug treatment and enforcement programs.
- Planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs.
- Crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
- Mental health programs and related law enforcement and corrections programs, including behavioral programs and crisis intervention teams.
